Rule No. 2. You must have a working knowledge of the business when you start and continue to increase your knowledge of it as you go along. If you don't know what you're doing when you start, your mistakes will be costly and often unnecessary, and you won't be able to keep up with the technological explosions in any field. Start smart and stay that way.

Rule No. 3. You must save money in your personal life and in your business venture as well. Discipline is the key to saving money. You must develop the will power to deny yourself immediate gratification or the temptation to gamble on the quick buck. Resources will be needed for expansion and should be guarded carefully.

Rule No. 4. You must take risks, both with your own money or with borrowed money. Risk-taking is essential to business growth. If you win, the money will be there. If you lose, and you will from time to time if you play long and hard enough, it must have been fun or it was not worth it.

Rule No. 7. Patience. This is the greatest business asset. Wait for the right time to make your moves. Let your business grow naturally, not by pressing your luck. Rules

One thing I learnt about butterflys when I was young is that you cannot help them to much.

I remember seeing a butterfly strugling to get free from its cocoon and it was almost free so I pulled out my pen knife and cut the cords holding the butterfly back.

Unfortunately after a few minutes it was on the ground dead.

Many years later I learnt that the strength the butterfly expends to get free if the same strength it needs to stay free.

So many people want the quick fix and dont realize that what they are going through now often provides the knowledge and strength to maintain the freedom they gain.

Bypass the problems and pain and in most cases you will have to go through it again or just loose that opportunity.

I just finished reading a report on people who have won lotteries or received huge insurance payouts. Most of them after 5 years are back to where they were before they won or are worse off.

Why?

Simply because they had not got the strength it takes most of us to get the freedom. They bought a big house but forgot with big houses comes big bills and responsabilities. So eventually they had no strength to keep the freedom.

Creating streaming video is one of the fastest growing graphics fields. With the new technology available, virtually any user can create desktop productions. However, there are several things to consider which will ensure quality results.

Following these steps will save you the expense of lost production time and the frustration that goes along with it.

Step 1: Plan your video shots in advance. A valuable technique for doing this is to use a storyboard. The storyboard is your road map, a device that shows you where you are going. Here, you plot out all the steps you will take in order to give your story flow and consistency. It has been said that when your storyboard is complete, so is the movie. All that remains is the execution.

Step 2: Keep all camera movements down to a minimum. Constant panning or zooming will not translate well to the web. It is better to tell your story using a series of set shots, instead of multiple zooming and panning. If you are panning, keep the motion slow. Panning too fast can induce nausea in the viewers.

Step 3: Be careful with your background, avoiding areas of high contrast or intensely bright backgrounds. Extremely bright images can cause the digital image format to tear or smear.

Step 4: Keep the backgrounds simple. If you use a solid, simple background, your subject will stand out, but if the background is too busy, the subject will tend to blend in. Worse, complex backgrounds increase the odds of artifacts (where portions of the image clump together) and jaggies (lack of a smooth edge) appearing on the edges of your subject.

Somewhere between ever more sophisticated graphic design and more complicated CSS, many designers are starting to forget one of the ground rules of the web. This rule is arguably the most important rule to follow at all times; one that you should always keep in mind when you're designing your website.

So what is it? It's simple. Your visitors are at your website to get information. Content is King.

The Search-Driven Web.

Studies show that well over 90% of users now have a search engine as their homepage, and use it for around half of everything they do on the web. Unless you're advertising your site heavily, most of your users are likely to arrive through a search engine.

However, they're relatively unlikely to just be searching for a description of your products. What are they looking for? Information. There's a reason why the web was once referred to as the 'information superhighway' – while some people might be actively looking to buy things, most of them are just looking for information.

Relevant Articles.

So, if you're selling products, you need to provide articles that your potential customers are likely to want to read. The bigger the audience you can build for your articles, the more conversions you're going to have to sales. It can't be emphasised enough just how important your content is: if it's badly-written, or not useful, your visitors are likely to just go back to their search results page and try another link. If you give them good information, though, you instantly create the kind of loyalty that no number of advertising dollars can buy.

What many practitioners of techniques like 'search engine optimisation' don't realise is this: you can't fake good content. However many keywords you might stick into it, you'll fool search engines, but not the visitors they bring in – all you're doing is costing yourself money in bandwidth and wasting people's time.

No Time to Write?

The most common objection I hear when I tell people they should write great content is that they have no time to write the amounts that would be needed – and, yes, writing can be very time-consuming. What you have to realise, though, is that there are plenty of ways around this, such as hiring a freelance writer to do some of the work for you, or using speech recognition software.

You might also consider buying in content from people who resell it, or even getting your users to write the content – there's nothing better than getting visitors to write their own content and then getting more visitors from search engines where people have found it. There are even sites offering content for free in exchange for a link back to them at the bottom of the article, although you should be cautious about reviewing the quality of content offered this way.

Keep it Updated.

Here's something that many people don't realise: it's better to write a little occasionally than to write a lot all at once. This means that, even if you have written hundreds of articles, you should release them one by one on a regular timescale. Both visitors and search engines prefer sites that are updated often to ones that have a big pile of content dumped on them once and then aren't touched for years.

Content Makes Money.

Nowadays, it's once again possible to make money from good content without even having anything to sell. Plenty of businesses were based on advertising back in the dot-com boom, but ad prices eventually dipped too low for this to be sustainable. Ad prices have now recovered, however, thanks to text advertising.

You can sign up with most of the big search engines now for context-sensitive ads for your site that are chosen automatically – Google AdSense runs the most popular service. This kind of advertising eliminates human 'ad editors' altogether, while producing ads that are targeted enough to give far better returns than they ever used to. Purely content-driven websites with ads are once again a viable revenue stream, and content is as much King as it's ever been.

What do you do with your intranet or internet site once you've added words and pictures? How about adding audio as well?
Audio is friendly, direct and ideally suited to getting complex messages across in a short space of time.

It's now getting easier to add audio to the net, thanks to increasing bandwidths and innovative new ways of compressing data.
The problem has been that CD-quality audio has traditionally been the preserve of ISDN- and ADSL-equipped users. Basically, there has been too much data to fit down the pipe.

But, borrowing on the same techniques that are used to compress digital photographic images, it is now possible to compress sound to make it fit down a standard dial-up 56KBps modem line.

The trick is to compress the audio in a way that doesn't sound offensive to the ear, but can still pass along the line at about 3 kilobytes per second, given that a dial-up modem downloads at about 4-ish kilobytes per second.

The next trick is to use streaming technology that can start to play the audio while it is still downloading. As a long as it is downloads fast enough you don't get annoying stops and starts. You should also end up with a 'buffer'. In many cases, the whole audio file will have downloaded long before the user has finished listening to it.

The volume of online streaming audio grew by 118 per cent last year, according to market researchers US-based AccuStream iMedia Research and the top ten internet radio stations received an average of 137.5m tuning hours in the same period, up from 63m in 2003.

Typical audio formats are Real’s Radio Player (as chosen by the BBC), the ubiquitous MP3 (as featured on thousands of youngster’s personal hi-fis) and Macromedia Flash.

The audio can either be recorded straight into your PC via a microphone and soundcard, or recorded on a Minidisc recorder and then digitised into the computer. Once there you can add music, voiceovers, cuts and fades with a program like Adobe Audition or Sony Soundforge. Music can be bought online for just a few pounds and you can even use free audio editing programmes, like Audacity.

What was once the preserve of the BBC and other high-end radio studios is now available on a desktop computer near you - but only if you have the skills to match.

I had some good friends around for dinner the other evening. During the social dinner conversations, one of my friends mentioned the interest on investment accounts on offer with the banks at the moment.

She had $10,000 to invest and was happy with an interest rate of 4.75%. The best 'at call' rate she had found after much research with financial institutions. She was after a safe investment during these uncertain times.

The stock market or property investment was not her cup of tea.

Preparing to record your audio!

In making recordings, the goal is always to get a clear, undistorted speech signal with as little noise as possible. Recording interviews requires a little more preparation but the principles are the same

Noise that will detract from or ruin signal quality for acoustic analysis can include:

Always make a one minute black recording to see if there are any noises you have missed.

However, to record speech in 'natural' situations, speakers often must be allowed to move around and interact with other people, with objects, or with their surroundings. What is Internet Radio, and what makes Radio, Radio!

Internet radio is just broadcast quality content being streamed over the internet. That is it, nothing more. There are 2 variations, and both are considered internet radio. One version is live content being streamed in real time based on a time schedule, but in reality that is not really necessary or cost effective for that matter. What I believe to be the next wave of useful marketing tactics using audio on the web, is building a niche internet radio station which will have tremendous marketing and audience building potential. It will be in the broadcaster's best interest to produce killer-archived content and post that regularly to stream on demand for their listeners.

This is so easy and cost effective to do, and does not require the live production techniques of traditional radio, nor the high costs and server infrastructure of live feed internet audio streaming. Be aware live streaming can be done through web companies such as www.Shoutcast.com or www.Live365.com, and many other others that have the data centers to multicast audio streams in real time. Internet radio needs only to be great audio content available upon demand online, and I see as an incredible opportunity for marketers of niche products and services to create to build audience or traffic to their online offerings.

Why do we listen to traditional radio and where do we hear it?

We listen for music/entertainment or news/information, not what the advertisers are selling and generally most of us are trapped in our vehicles in highway traffic. Very few of us listen to radio to hear commercials, except maybe the advertisers who paid to run those ads. But if you think about traditional radio, we tuned in to listen to content we like, and we get essentially spammed for 8 minutes of every hour by advertisers trying to sell us everything from soft drinks, diet plans to cars and travel packages!

Advertising is all radio cares about, but they have to produce shows that attract listeners. When Aribitron, the rating service of radio, says you have listeners in a market, you then have the proof to sell that 8 minutes of each hour the FCC allows you to pay for everything. Like the promotional give-aways, the DJs, the sales people, the receptionists, the managers, program directors and the office overhead to create the content. That 8 minutes of audio real estate in radio is all they have to make money and it is based on if they have an audience and how big the research from Arbitron says it is.

What has this got to do with the Internet and Internet Radio?

The model of radio has been working and profitable for years. The only difference between WABC radio and YourDomain.com is they have an audience (akin to web traffic) and they are pros at producing audience attracting audio content that they broadcast 24 hours a day to a limited area geographically. With your dot com, you can broadcast audience-attracting audio content just good as theirs, broadcast it on demand to anywhere in the world, and make profits with niches where they can't.

Example: Fly fishing radio, Pottery artists radio, Swing trading radio, Hair coloring tips radio, thousands of other possible niches would fail horribly in traditional radio broadcast models, but niches thrive on the internet, and so does niche internet radio. Once the audience is built, if yours is not already, all the profitable techniques of traditional radio apply. It would not be spam in an internet radio program to advertise and direct listeners to online offers. You could run all the audio ads you want. Analyzing your web traffic statistics can be an invaluable tool for a number of different reasons. But before you can make full use of this tool, you need to understand how to interpret the data.

Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that you then have to interpret and make pertinent use of. However, the data you receive from your host company can be overwhelming if you don't understand how to apply it to your particular business and website. Let's start by examining the most basic data - the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

These figures are the most accurate measure of your website's activity. It would appear on the surface that the more traffic you see recorded, the better you can assume your website is doing, but this is an inaccurate perception. You must also look at the behavior of your visitors once they come to your website to accurately gauge the effectiveness of your site.

There is often a great misconception about what is commonly known as "hits" and what is really effective, quality traffic to your site. Hits simply means the number of information requests received by the server. If you think about the fact that a hit can simply equate to the number of graphics per page, you will get an idea of how overblown the concept of hits can be. For example, if your homepage has 15 graphics on it, the server records this as 15 hits, when in reality we are talking about a single visitor checking out a single page on your site. As you can see, hits are not useful in analyzing your website traffic.

The more visitors that come to your website, the more accurate your interpretation will become. The greater the traffic is to your website, the more precise your analysis will be of overall trends in visitor behavior. The smaller the number of visitors, the more a few anomalous visitors can distort the analysis.

The aim is to use the web traffic statistics to figure out how well or how poorly your site is working for your visitors. One way to determine this is to find out how long on average your visitors spend on your site. If the time spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an underlying problem. Then the challenge is to figure out what that problem is.

It could be that your keywords are directing the wrong type of visitors to your website, or that your graphics are confusing or intimidating, causing the visitor to exit rapidly. Use the knowledge of how much time visitors are spending on your site to pinpoint specific problems, and after you fix those problems, continue to use time spent as a gauge of how effective your fix has been.

Additionally, web traffic stats can help you determine effective and ineffective areas of your website. If you have a page that you believe is important, but visitors are exiting it rapidly, that page needs attention. Your website undoubtedly has exit pages, such as a final order or contact form. This is a page you can expect your visitor to exit rapidly. However, not every visitor to your site is going to find exactly what he or she is looking for, so statistics may show you a number of different exit pages. This is normal unless you notice a exit trend on a particular page that is not intended as an exit page. In the case that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your website on a page not designed for that purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to discern what the problem is. Once you pinpoint potential weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the wrong page.

After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it's time to turn to your keywords and phrases. Notice if particular keywords are directing a specific type of visitor to your site. The more targeted the visitor - meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, and even better, fill out your contact form or make a purchase - the more valuable that keyword is.

However, if you find a large number of visitors are being directed - or should I say misdirected - to your site by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands adjustment. Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you. Close analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a vital understanding of your visitor's needs and motivations.

Finally, if you notice that users are finding your website by typing in your company name, break open the champagne! It means you have achieved a significant level of brand recognition, and this is a sure sign of burgeoning success.

Creating your own audio studio has never been easier. There are so many great products around today that will allow you to produce high quality audio for a fraction of the price it used to cost.

HARDWARE

The first thing you will need is a compatible computer. Today every new computer is already set up with everything you will need. A basic sound card with a mic and line in jack. If you do not have a sound card they are very cheap and you can get a good one from any standard computer shop.

Next you will need a good mic. These come in all sizes and shapes with different configurations however a general all round mic like the Logitech Noise-canceling microphone is fine for beginners. I suggest you get a desk top one to start with as you may want to move into video later and so you wont want a headset in your videos.

Of course you could go up a stage and get a preamp with a professional mic but this will start running into dollars and the whole aim of this article is to help you get started.

Next you will want to get some cables to connect up your tape recorder and other audio equipment. Again the computer stores now have packs that will connect up pretty well any device into your computer to digitalize your sound.

SOFTWARE - RECORDING

Recording your audio is probably one of the most critical parts of this process and again you can get software that ranges from free to many thousands of dollars. For this exercise I suggest you download the free copy of Audacity. This is an excellent software package that will allow you to record from your mic or any equipment you have.

It provides excellent editing capabilities and also will allow you to edit multiple tracks and then combine them into one single track. For a wuick overview of how to do this you can watch this video.

The next piece of software you will need for your studio is a converting program that will allow you to convert different formats. For example you may have a real audio file and you want to convert it to mp3. dBpoweramp is like the swiss army

If you are going to stream an mp3 direct then you may want to recompile the file to a smaller format. RazorLame is a so-called "front-end" for use with LAME. Coaching for Success - Stupidity ?

Lots of smart people do stupid things and
some stupid people do very smart things. This is the subject of today's
coaching.

This coaching session is inspired by Phil Baker who is a pastor and motivational speaker from Perth, Australia. I went to a breakfast where he was speaking on Ten Business Principles We Can Learn from John F Kennedy.

This coaching session is based on another one of Phil's great messages called, 'Stupidity ? - Six Lessons We Can Learn from Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter'.

While this is a fun coaching session, using some technology to make it more interesting, the points raised are valid. I have learnt over the last few years of my Internet career that if you can harness your crocodiles you will find success.

Let's listen to the first point from Phil.

So what is your crocodile? Are you being adventurous? With Internet marketing you need to develop these qualities as it is very similar to the wild. That's why its called the wild, wild web.

Next point, It only Looks Stupid.

Without experience and putting time into preparation you are entering dangerous ground. This is probably why 95% of people fail with Internet business. They get chewed up by the crocodiles.

Next, Hedgehogs eat Crocs.

Jim Collins who we featured recently has taken this concept and applied it to business. What is your hedgehog? Be the best you can be and do what you are good at. Don't try and follow the masses. Find your niche!
